Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court Justice, on the Court's refusal to take up any of the marriage cases presented to it:

“[As] you know when there's no disagreement among the Courts of Appeals, we don't step in. The major job that the Court has is to keep the law of the United States more or less uniform, so when Courts of Appeals disagree about what the law of the United States is, then we are obligated to grant review. If there had been a court of Appeals on the other side, we probably would have taken that case, but up till now, all the Courts of Appeal agree, so there is no crying need for us to step in.”

Because right is right, and equality is equality, and all Americans deserve that.

President Barack Obama, on the Supreme Court’s refusal to take on marriage equality:

“Ultimately, I think the Equal Protection Clause does guarantee same-sex marriage in all 50 states. But, as you know, courts have always been strategic. There have been times where the stars were aligned and the Court, like a thunderbolt, issues a ruling like Brown v. Board of Education, but that's pretty rare. And, given the direction of society, for the Court to have allowed the process to play out the way it has may make the shift less controversial and more lasting."

Greg Abbott, Texas Attorney General fighting to keep the state’s marriage ban, on whether he would have defended a prohibition on interracial marriage had he been in office 50 years ago:

“Right now, if there was a ban on interracial marriage, that’s already been ruled unconstitutional, and all I can do is deal with the issues that are before me … I can’t go back and answer some hypothetical question like that.”

He can’t answer if he would fight to keep a ban on interracial marriage? And that’s what the GOP is putting up as their candidate for governor of Texas. Lord help them.

Benedict Cumberbatch, on why The Imitation Game, the story of gay hero Alan Turing, doesn't have an explicit gay sex scene:

“You don’t see him [Alan Turing] having sex. That’s not an exploration of someone's sex life. The fact that he's chemically castrated because he admits to being a homosexual; he talks about entreating a young man to touch his penis. I mean, it's pretty explicit. If you need to see that to understand that he's gay, then all is lost for any kind of subtle storytelling.”

Plus, the sex isn’t the story being told; it’s his life, and he was far more than just a gay man.

Shonda Rhimes, on why her shows have so many gay and lesbian story lines:

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court justice, on resigning while President Obama is in office:

"Who do you think President Obama could appoint at this very day, given the boundaries that we have? If I resign any time this year, he could not successfully appoint anyone I would like to see in the court. [The Senate ...] took off the filibuster for lower federal court appointments, but it remains for this court. So anybody who thinks that if I step down, Obama could appoint someone like me, they’re misguided. As long as I can do the job full steam…. I think I’ll recognize when the time comes that I can’t any longer. But now I can."

It’s not necessarily because they’re opposed but because they aren’t aware of the need. So we are going to be sure to utilize this horrible event to make sure that they hear about it. I’m going to be bringing two people with me who will be able to tell them all about it."

As I say, beating a man because he’s gay is hate; beating a man because you want his wallet, is hateful.

Jim Ferlo, a Pennsylvania state Senator, coming out as gay at a press conference calling for hate crimes legislation to protect LGBT citizens:

"Hundreds of people know I'm gay. I just never made an official declaration. I never felt I had to wear a billboard on my forehead. But I'm gay. Get over it. I love it. It's a great life."

We can get over it, but the coming out process needs to continue. When our numbers grow, when we stand up, when we demand to be counted, we cannot be ignored.

Jack Hatch, Democrat, Iowa State Senator, and gubernatorial candidate, on how this year's state election could be crucial for gay marriage:

"It is very clear [getting rid of same-sex marriage] will be [Republicans'] No. 1 priority and Iowans should be very skeptical of that...People who believe in marriage equality should realize the rights we have in Iowa are only as good as the quality of our politicians and the words of our Constitution. If they want to change the words of our Constitution, we should be very scared of the agenda of the Republican leadership."

It’s a shame — and by shame I mean it’s stupid — that the GOP is focusing on same-sex marriage when we have terrorists and global warming and joblessness and racism and poverty.

President Barack Obama, on John Boehner’s lawsuit: 

"There are a number of Republicans, including a number in the Texas delegation, who are mad at me for taking these actions. They actually plan to sue me. Now, I don't know which things they find most offensive — me helping to create jobs, or me raising wages, or me easing the student loan burdens, or me making sure women can find out whether they're getting paid the same as men for doing the same job. I don't know which of these actions really bug them."

Probably all of them, because Obama wasn’t helping the NRA or the One Percent, which we all know as the major donors to the GOP.

Chris Christie, New Jersey Governor, on continuing to fight same-sex marriage even though he lost that battle in his own state:

“I don’t think that there’s going to be some major referee who’s going to say now it’s time to stop. Certainly I’m not going to, because these are opinions that I feel strongly about. … The country will resolve this over a period of time, but do I think it’s resolved now? No.”

Good luck carrying that theme into a presidential campaign, asshat.

"Here's the thing, the states need to get out of the marriage business. There's no way that the state of California can deny a marriage license to four spouses now. Eight spouses, or I would say three human spouses and the canine they absolutely love because if love is the foundation of marriage, they can love their dog, too."

Huh, maybe someone should teach Ablow to read because the new wording is singular — “spouse” — not plural, as in many wives or husbands; and since once has to be able to read and write and sign one’s name to a marriage license that eliminates, um, dogs and horses and trees and cars.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court Justice, on the Hobby Lobby decision:

"Religious organizations exist to foster the interests of person subscribing to the same religious faith. Not so of for-profit corporations. Workers who sustain the operations of those corporations commonly are not drawn from one religious community."

She needs to start kicking ass and taking names on SCOTUS.

Todd Chrisley, star of USA’s reality show Chrisley Knows Best, on ‘the gay’ rumors:

“I don't believe that being gay is something you should be ashamed of. I don't believe it's something you should hide. And if I wanted to date someone, I would call you and I would ask you go to dinner with me. But right now, I'm very content in my life with where I am. Today, I'm not gay.”

Nice sentiment, all right, especially coming from someone who pings my Gaydar like a sledgehammer on a church bell, but I’ll take him at his word, with one caveat:

Today you’re not gay? Yesterday, maybe? Tomorrow, perhaps? That’s one odd thing to say.
