Today in Christian Love: God Hates Fags ... So Shoot Them

Another day, another Hate Crime.

This time it’s Wayne Steven Odegard, of Minnesota, who harassed patrons outside a gay club in Minneapolis and then, just for fun apparently, because they were gays after all, he decided to shoot a gay couple with a BB gun.

The attack occurred last September, when Wayne Steven Odegard stood outside the Saloon bar and began hurling anti-gay epithets at the people waiting to get into the club, Shortly after his little homophobic tirade, he pulled out the BB gun and began shooting into the crowd of patrons and then ran. Tyler Erickson, the club’s security guard, who witnessed the entire altercation and pursued Odegard as he fled the scene.

"I ran after him and then it ended up he shot a different gay couple in the leg, with that gun and it went through his jeans and drew blood. He told me multiple times that I’m going to go to hell and he’s going to bring me with him. He recited a biblical passage — I think it’s a Deuteronomy passage." — Tyler Erickson

Erickson caught Odegard and held him until police arrived, charged and arrested the man for making terroristic threats; last month Odegard plead guilty to the charges in October and was sentenced to six months in jail, and ordered to undergo chemical dependency and psychological evaluations and attend anger management classes. In addition, given that his crime was based on the sexual orientation of his victims, the court raised his probation period from three years to five years.

Okay. So what?

Here’s so what: I blame every single one of those so-called religious anti-gay bigots, like Pat Robertson, Tony Perkins, Bryan Fischer, Peter LaBarbera, Mike Huckabee, Brian Brown and Linda Harvey; I blame NOM and the FRC and the AFA.

For every single time they take to the airwaves to rail against gay folks, and quote the Bible, and pretend that they speak for God, they incite people like Wayne Steven Odegard to physically attack gay people just for being gay.

And yet, these same wingnuts, in the same breath, will rant and rave about how The Gays are out to destroy religion and harm the Christians, and rid the word of God-fearing individuals. And still I wait for that Hate Crime, the one perpetrated by a Gay Man or Woman, waiting outside a church, shooting a BB gun at a Christian couple and shouting anti-Christian epithets.

But that hasn’t happened. I have yet to see one incident of a gay person bashing, shooting, hurling hate speech, at Christians. And yet we have these losers and morons and haters telling their minions that we are an abomination, a sin against nature, and that God hates us; and because they do that, because they couch it in Freedom of Religion, they encourage people like Wayne Steven Odegard to attack gay people in the streets while shouting Bible verses.

I blame Wayne Steven Odegard for what he did in Minneapolis, but I also blame Fischer, LaBarbera, Brown, Perkins, Harvey, Huckabee and the rest.

They all played a part in that attack.

I Didn't Say It ...

Laverne Cox, on her rather historic year:

“So much of the year I’ve had is historic, but this is a moment that is bigger than me. I meet people who say that my role has given them the courage to say, ‘This is who I am’ and ‘I can transition and be successful and to be out as a trans person. … We have this internal compass of the truth inside of us. And that is our job, really, to quiet all this noise around us and listen to that.”

It’s that inner voice that guides you, but, as Laverne says, sometimes the outside noises drown it out.

Bernie Sanders, Democratic Senator from Vermont, on making Election Day a national holiday:

"Election Day should be a national holiday so that everyone has the time and opportunity to vote. While this would not be a cure-all, it would indicate a national commitment to create a more vibrant democracy. We should not be satisfied with a ‘democracy’ in which more than 60 percent of our people don't vote and some 80 percent of young people and low-income Americans fail to vote. We can and must do better than that."

Gee, how I wonder how the GOP feels about having more people vote?

Uh huh.

Anthony Mundine, Australian aboriginal boxer, on his thoughts about gay being a choice:

“I told you I speak the truth, I got nothing against homosexuality, if you’re gay, be gay, that’s your choice, that’s your right in this day and age. But don’t exploit it on prime time when there’s kids watching and having sons come towards you and going ‘dad is that alright, for a man to kiss a man?”

He has nothing against The Gays; he just doesn’t want to see us anywhere, especially on the TV.

Mundine goes on to say that he has a lot of homosexual friends though I find that hard to believe.

Rand Paul, Teabagging wingnut, on Hillary Clinton running for President:

"I think all the polls show if she does run, she’ll win the Democrat nomination. But I don’t think it’s for certain. It’s a very taxing undertaking to go through. It’s a rigorous physical ordeal, I think, to be able to campaign for the presidency."

Really, Rand? At least she doesn’t wear some kind of muskrat on her head and call it hair. At least she has more than two brain cells to rub together.

Even Rand’s own people — i.e. Fox News — denounced his attack on Clinton's age.

Jon Stewart, on Fox News:

"I think that Roger Ailers’ [sic] great gift was mainstreaming that nativist, paranoid streak in American politics and putting it on television in a much prettier, shinier box. What they did was change the inflection point. AM talk radio is, ‘We are being robbed by communists and progressives that are destroying this country. They are a cancer and treasonous!’ Fox News does it like, [sweet, cheery voice] ‘Are we being run by communists? Is it treason what they’re doing? Let’s have the discussion.’”

Funny that it takes a comic to point out the lack of newsworthiness of Fox.

Tony Perkins, of the Family Research Center hate group, on Apple CEO Tim Cook coming out as gay:

"When companies get involved in cultural battles, every consumer is forced to take part. As conservatives we aren’t looking for businesses to take our side - we just want them to be neutral. Of course, Tim Cook has the right to express his views but consumers have rights too, including the right to respond. As Christians we’re called to be good stewards of god’s money...and apps like 2nd Vote and Faith-Driven Consumer help shoppers do exactly that. Let’s face it, money talks and corporate America is listening.”

God’s money? GOD’S money? I didn’t see Her down at my job punching the time clock!

Tony Perkins Wants Kids Pulled From Public Schools Because Pete Cahall Is Gay

It was just last Thursday that I posted about Pete Cahall, the principal at Wilson High School in Washington DC, who came out as gay at the school’s annual LGBT Pride celebration — see post HERE. It kinda proved my pint that it doesn’t matter when you come out, just that you do come out; strength in numbers and all that you know. perfect sytless.

But, one person wasn’t happy that Pete Cahall decided to live his life truthfully and that person was rightwingnut Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, a certified hate group. I mean, he really must have gotten his thong twisted over that story because he called for the most ludicrous response to Principal Cahall’s coming out party.

Perkins is calling for all parents, everywhere, across the nation, to boycott public schools and remove their children from public schools, placing them in “other alternatives” because there’s a gay principal in DC.

Seriously.

Perkins is especially incensed because the students cheered their principal’s coming out and that the school district even “tweeted it out.”

 “Eighty-three percent of the students coming out of the District of Columbia are not proficient in reading skills, but they know how to celebrate gay pride. As we drop further and further in the global ranking of math and science scores, at least our kids will understand sex-ed. Amazing.

“If you have your children in public schools, unless you’re in a district where you know exactly what’s going on in some rural part of the country where values are still embraced, you really need to think about whether or not you want to expose your kids to what’s happening in our public school system. I would encourage you to look for other alternatives.”

I got news for you Tony, I'm as queer as the day is long and I live in rural America; and there are others, just like me, right here in the same town, Tony.

And there are others like me, and Pete Cahall in every school district, in every city, town, township, zip code, rural country road; there are gay teachers and administrators, so why this one principal has gotten you so hot under the collar I don’t know. But why stop now?

I mean, if you want children pulled from public schools because a gay man was cheered for his honesty at one school, then why not completely boycott any business, any institution, any place in the world that has a gay person in it.

Leave your church because the choir director might be gay; or maybe the person in the pew in front of you is queer.

Remove all your money from Wells Fargo, or whatever bank you use, because I bet a teller, or a bank manager at one of the branches is involved in a same-sex relationship.

Stop all upcoming medical procedures because the hospital has a gay doctor or nurse, or intern or orderly.

You see how stupid you sound, Tony? If you want to boycott a school or any business or church or organization because a gay person came out and was celebrated then you’ll find yourself living all alone somewhere, probably behind a fence that says “Gays Keep Out.”

Tony, dear, we’re here, we’re queer, and we’re everywhere.

Boycott that.
